Gavin Newsom’s Signed Bible Sparks Debate on Reverence and Politics

Governor Gavin Newsom’s reported “signed Bible” has sparked debate. Some see parody, others see disrespect. What does this say about politics and faith colliding?

Gavin Newsom’s Signed Bible Sparks Debate on Reverence and Politics

Besides the wildfires that are still blazing in California and the water shortage that is complicating containment in some areas, there's also a wildfire that's apparently blazing in the belly of California Governor Gavin Newsom. In his efforts to mock President Trump's MAGA website, Newsom has started his own merch website, complete with a Bible he has allegedly signed.

Newsom's team has neither confirmed nor denied whether any Bibles have been sold, according to GQ.com. It's also questionable as to whether or not any were ever published, or what's actually inside of them if they were. Nevertheless, the notion that they exist has stirred up controversy.

Can Newsom's Efforts Unify the Democratic Base for 2028?
Will Cain took to the airwaves on Monday on his Fox show, the Will Cain Show, to express his thoughts on Newsom's store, and in particular, a $100 Bible that is touted as "sold out," according to The Daily Beast.

"He seems to have found ground, legs with the left by mocking President Trump," Cain said. "Like the ChatGPT personality, he's just borrowing now from President Trump, copying his style with X post, now he's even going for his own MAGA-style merch."

Cain went on to highlight a hat, a mug, and the "sold out" Bible.

"I'm just following [Trump's] example. If you have issues with what I'm putting out, you sure as hell should have concerns with what he's putting out as president," Newsom posted on his X account last week, which was picked up by The Independent.

"I'm not sure it's smart," said Frank Bruni during HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" show, which was picked up by Fox News. "Since Trump came down that escalator in 2015, Democrats have been mocking him and belittling him as a strategy."

Democratic strategist Lis Smith told The Independent that she thinks the trolling by Newsom and his team has been effective, "but Democrats can't just be the anti-Trump party. Voters know what we're against—the challenge is showing them what we're for."

A Tale of Two Motives
Some may argue that both Governor Newsom and President Trump have trivialized God's Word by selling it on their websites. At the same time, motive is something that should also be considered.

Newsom is simply mocking Trump, and possibly expressing some pent-up hostility about Trump dispatching the National Guard to California to try to bring order when there were riots in California regarding Trump's immigration and deportation policies. Newsom has a lot on his plate right now. Not only are the troops still there, but California is still burning with wildfires and suffering from a water shortage, which is something of a sore spot even though Trump signed an executive order regarding Emergency Measures to Provide Water Resources in California and Improve Disaster Response in Certain Areas. In a nutshell, this would allow more federal water to flow through California for both disaster response and meeting the general needs of the state, according to KMPH Fox News.

In contrast, when Trump advertised his God Bless The USA Bible, it was clear that the lyrics to the Lee Greenwood song, "God Bless The U.S.A.," were included in it, as well as The Declaration of Independence and its signers, The Constitution, The Bill of Rights, and The Pledge of Allegiance. Trump said he wanted a Bible with these documents included in it to be made available to Americans because many Americans have never read the founding documents, don't know the liberty and rights they have, and that those rights are in danger of being taken away. He also wanted to encourage Americans, especially Christian Americans, to take the time to read the Bible, and he wanted to focus on bringing Christian values back into the culture.

Trump explained his motive behind the God Bless The USA Bible in a YouTube video last year.

One of the most notable things that President Trump has done to improve the focus of bringing Christian values back into the culture includes his executive order to establish the White House Faith Office, which is designed to defend religious liberty.
