Robert Wolgemuth, a titan of Christian publishing and husband to Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth, has passed away, leaving a legacy of over 20 books and co-founding a prominent literary agency.



Robert Wolgemuth, a towering figure in the Christian publishing world and the husband of author and speaker Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth, died Saturday following complications from pneumonia. He was 77.

Wolgemuth served as president of Thomas Nelson Publishers and, in 1992, co-founded the literary agency Wolgemuth & Associates (now Wolgemuth & Wilson), which represented more than 100 Christian authors. He was a distinguished author in his own right, authoring more than 20 books, including Gun Lap, Lies Men Believe, Finish Line, and the notes to the Men’s Daily Bible. He and Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth co-authored You Can Trust God to Write Your Story. He also served as chair of the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association.

Wolgemuth’s books sold more than 2 million copies, with five receiving Silver Medallion Awards from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association.

He was the father of two grown daughters, whom he shared with his late wife, Bobbie Wolgemuth, who passed away in 2014. He married DeMoss – the founder and lead Bible teacher for Revive Our Hearts, a global women’s ministry – in November 2015.

Wolgemuth entered the hospital on Christmas Eve.

“Whenever Robert traveled any distance – perhaps driving to an appointment or an airport or flying to another city – when he reached his destination, he would text me a single word: Safe,” Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth wrote on social media following his death. “He wanted to let me know that he had arrived. I'm writing to let you know that Robert is ‘safe.’ My ‘DH’ (dear husband) has arrived at his final destination. He is safely Home.”

Family and friends gathered around Wolgemuth during his final days – singing hymns, praying, weeping, and worshiping, she wrote.

“We left Robert’s tired, worn-out body in the hospital room,” she wrote. “Soon it will be laid into the ground. But Robert has never been more alive. This faithful, courageous, precious man of God has entered his eternal rest and reward – not because of anything he did to deserve it, but because of the magnificent, redeeming grace and love of Christ. Many tears have been shed in these days. And there will be many more to come. Robert loved me in a way I had never before imagined possible. The Lord gave us an amazing ten years together (122 months next week!), to joyfully love and serve Him, each other, and others. Robert has been an exquisite treasure to me. It feels surreal to think of him being gone.

“But I know that one day, in the resurrection, Robert’s body will be transformed ‘into the likeness of [Christ’s] glorious body’ (Phil 3:21). No more sickness, sadness, suffering, or sorrow.”

California pastor Greg Laurie, a friend of Wolgemuth’s, offered a tribute.

This is my friend Robert Wolgemuth, who went to be with the Lord early this morning.

“Robert was a legend in Christian publishing,” Laurie wrote, adding that Wolgemuth worked with him on the New Believer’s Bible and his book Jesus Revolution.

“Please join me in praying for comfort for Nancy and for Robert’s children and family, knowing that we ‘do not grieve as those who have no hope.’ (1 Thessalonians 4:13).”
