Jesus says to her, Mary. She, turning around, ... Jesus says to her, Mary. She, turning around, says to Him in Hebrew, Rabboni, which means Teacher. Jesus says to her, Touch Me not, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, I ascend to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God. (John 20:16-17) Her heart filled sorrowful desolation, Mary Magdalene seemed unable to comprehend the angels’ message that her Lord had risen from the dead. Because His body was not in the grave she turned away from the angels who were there. And when He himself drew near, she had no thought of expecting Him, but supposed Him to be the gardener; and from Him also she turned away. One word from His lips changes everything, “Mary.” He calls His own ship by name, and she knows His voice. Here is the One whom she loves, alive before her eyes! What joy unspeakable fills her heart as she no doubt involuntarily plunges forward to grasp Him. But He tells her, “Touch Me not, for I have not yet ascended to My Father.” No doubt she thought had Him back the same as before. On the basis of that relationship, however, she can no longer touch Him. His death has set that aside. He now announces to her a new relationship, and gives her the great honor of carrying the message of this to those to whom He calls “My brethren.” He was to ascend to “My Father and your Father.” For in resurrection, He is the head of a new creation in which God is now in a vital way Father to all who know His beloved Son. He was virtually telling Mary that, though He was all that she had on earth, yet now she was no longer to have even Him on earth; but she would have Him in heaven, in the Father’s own presence. All her hopes and her blessings were now to be centered there, together with all the brethren of the Lord. L.M Grant |
