Titus, Helper of Paul

We urged Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also complete this grace in you as well But thanks be to God who puts the same earnest care for you into the heart of Titus. For he not only accepted the exhortation, but being more diligent, he went to you of his own accord.

Titus, a true son in our common faith I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you.

2 Corinthians 8:6, 16-17; Titus 1:4-5

Titus, Helper of Paul
From the way Paul addresses Titus, and the references he makes in Galatians 2, we conclude that Titus, a Greek, was also one of the many spiritual sons Paul had led to the Savior. While Paul had circumcised Timothy—who had a Jewish mother and an unsaved Greek father—to avoid giving offense to the Jews to whose synagogues he would come, he deliberately did not circumcise Titus, insisting that this was not a necessity for salvation.

As Titus matured spiritually, Paul sent him to assemblies on sensitive errands. Titus shared his concern for the wellbeing of the saints. Naturally, Paul waited anxiously for Titus to return to share the results of his errands. Paul had had real concern about grave difficulties in Corinth and had written to them. How would they receive his exhortations? When Titus caught up with him, Paul was greatly relieved by what he heard from him.

Titus and other trusted brothers also collected the funds that assemblies in Macedonia and Greece were giving for needy saints in Judea—a very sensitive job when all money was gold, silver, and copper. Later Paul charged Titus to maintain order in and select elders for new assemblies in Crete. This was a special responsibility of apostles and their delegates, for assemblies in the Bible never selected their leaders, just as sheep do not choose their shepherds. We need more brothers like Titus today, who have a deep concern for the saints of God!
