Lessons on Jehoram (1)—We Must Trust in God to Build Our Life

Jehoram established himself over the kingdom of his father, and strengthened himself; and he slew all his brethren with the sword, and certain also of the princes of Israel.
2 Chronicles 21:4

Lessons on Jehoram (1)—We Must Trust in God to Build Our Life
What a great contrast we have between Jehoshaphat and his firstborn son Jehoram. We read of Jehoshaphat that “he took courage in the ways of Jehovah,” and consequently “Jehovah established the kingdom in his hand” (2 Chr. 17:6, 5). But of Jehoram we read that he “established himself over the kingdom of his father.” He desired to obtain the same thing as his father, but instead of turning to God to have it, he sought to obtain it by his own strength. Instead of walking in the way of his forefather David—fleeing idolatry, seeking the God of his father, walking in His commandments—as Jehoshaphat did, he walked in the way of the kings of Israel and killed all his brethren, probably out of fear of competition, as he also did to those among the princes whom he perceived as a threat. But if he had trusted in God, the Lord Himself would have established him!

This is an important practical lesson for us. Let us trust in God to build our life. “Confide in Jehovah with all thy heart, and lean not unto thine own intelligence” (Prov. 3:5). We are warned that “he that confideth in his own heart is a fool; but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered” (Prov. 28:26). Jehoram should have known these things, and seen them in his father, and have trusted God to establish him over the kingdom instead of becoming a murderer and an idolater. If the Lord was with Jehoshaphat and had given him riches and honor in abundance, the Lord was against Jehoram, and all was taken from him, even health.

The Lord Jesus said, “Whoever therefore hears these My words and does them, I will liken him to a prudent man, who built his house upon the rock” (Mt. 7:24). Let us go to the Lord Jesus and have the house of our lives established upon the rock.

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; ...More

What shall the baptized for the dead do if those that are baptized rise not at all? Why also are they baptized for them?
(1 Corinthians 15:29)

Who are “the dead,” and who are those “baptized for the dead”? The next verse gives an important hint: “Why do we also endanger...More

A CONSCIENCE VOID OF OFFENCE

The Church of Jesus Christ on earth will be healthy and pleasant if Christians would live with a conscience void of offence. Unfortunately, offences often arise here and there in the Body of Christ today. This is caused by the misuse of opportunities, wealth and other material possessions. For this to be uprooted from...More
