Lessons on Joash (1)—Repairing the House of God

Joash set his heart on repairing the house of the Lord. Then he gathered the priests and the Levites, and said to them "see that you do it quickly." However the Levites did not do it quickly.
2 Chronicles 24:4-5

Lessons on Joash (1)—Repairing the House of God
What a surprising thing to read! Joash had more will, zeal, and energy to repair the house of the Lord than did the priests and the Levites combined! They were coming in every day for the service of God and worship, but they were neglecting the house of God!

Children of God, we have been made a holy priesthood for God, and the Father is seeking worshipers in spirit and truth. But do we have the heart of the Lord Jesus for His house, for His Assembly? Paul and Timothy are good examples in this regard. We read that Paul daily had a "deep concern for all the churches," and that Timothy was like-minded, having a genuine concern for the state and welfare of the saints (2 Cor. 11:28; Phil. 2:20).

It is a very excellent and precious thing to gather together every first day of the week, the Lord's Day, for praise, adoration, and remembering the Lord in His death until He comes as we partake of the Lord's Supper. But this is not all! There are six other days in the week. What is the state of the assembly? Do we care about the welfare of the saints? This welfare can be practical help; it can be words of comfort; it can be the presence of someone; it can also be demolishing erroneous doctrines and building with sound teaching; it can be pastoral care; and it certainly is speaking to others about their sins, the coming judgment, and the salvation there is in Christ. Worship is not the end of all Christian activity! It is the highest of them all but, by all means, not the only one!

May we be like Joash in this! Taking the means, the time, and the energy to invest ourselves in repairing and building the house of God. The strength is not in us, but in the Lord, as also the wisdom to guide us in this precious work! What can I do today to help, comfort, encourage, edify, and build up even one of the Lord's people?
