Obedience From the Heart?

Those who seek Him will praise the Lord.
Psalm 22:26

Obedience From the Heart?
When Rehoboam took over as king from his father Solomon (1 Ki. 12), he preferred to heed the counsel of his buddies rather than the elders who had counseled his father. Even here at the outset we see a hint of his character, and the consequence was a split in the kingdom. He proceeded to put an army together, thinking he could retake the northern tribes by force. When God sent a message to him by Shemaiah, telling him the split was from God, Rehoboam obeyed and turned back. Although we can commend Rehoboam for obeying in this case, what had been lacking in the first place was his desire to seek the Lord. God had to intervene and send Shemaiah. The Word of God tells us at the end of Rehoboam's life that this flaw is what characterized him overall: "And he did evil, because he did not prepare his heart to seek the Lord" (2 Chr. 12:14).

In contrast, his grandson Asa had his heart in the right place (2 Chr. 14:2-5). Not only did he teach the people to obey, but what comes first in the account is that he taught them to seek the Lord.

You cannot fake anything with God. Children may, on occasion, obey their parents out of duty rather than love, and if they are good at it, their parent might not be able to tell the difference; but God sees the heart and knows our every motive (1 Sam. 16:7).

We want to obey the Lord not out of mere duty, nor because there is a reward, but because we care about His things and out of love for Him—this is what it means to seek Him. In doing this we will have joy in our walk with God and our thoughts concerning Him will be precious. Those who seek the Lord will never be disappointed.

Keep us, Lord, O keep us cleaving

To Thyself and still believing,Till the hour of our receiving

Promised joys with Thee!

Every apartment or compartment with a lock has its key. It takes a key to open the gate of a house and several keys to enter the house its rooms. If you have fridge, car or wardrobe, you will equally have their keys. From the foregoing therefore, it is apparent that several good things with value have their...More

The gospel had made great inroads into the aristocracy and among intellectuals, and had already changed the lives...More
