Ten Miracles in Matthew 8 and 9 (3)—Peter’s Mother-in-Law Healed

And when Jesus had come to Peter's house, He saw his mother-in-law laid down and in a fever.
Matthew 8:14

Ten Miracles in Matthew 8 and 9 (3)—Peter's Mother-in-Law Healed
This is the third miracle in a series of ten recorded here by Matthew. In the first, a leper was healed. In the second, a centurion's servant (8:1-4, 5-13).

Peter's mother-in-law, healed from her fever, arose and served the Lord Jesus. A fever indicates that by nature we are unserviceable to Him: the body temperature is out of control. When we are not in control of our actions, motives, words, or thoughts, we are unserviceable to Christ. Mark had, so to speak, been in a fever when he abandoned Paul and Barnabas; this led to a "very warm feeling" between these two beloved servants (Acts 15:36-41). But he was a man who experienced Christ's restoring power. At the end, Paul said, "Mark is serviceable to me for ministry" (2 Tim. 4:11).

In this miracle, we learn Christ's compassion. Previously, the leper and the centurion came to Him. Here, He comes to the house. He came, He saw, He touched. The initiative here is all His. Then, as evening comes (Mt. 8:16-17), many are brought to Him and He heals them all, so that Peter's mother-in-law becomes the sample and prototype of a multitude of healings. Concerning these healings, Matthew says that Isaiah's prophecy was then fulfilled: "Himself took our infirmities and bore our diseases" (v. 17). Note carefully that this is not the cross. It is not, as some say, that there is "healing in the atonement." No, it is rather His wonderful compassion during His life of service. Before He relieved the sufferers, He felt as they felt, or, as one has beautifully said, "He bore in His spirit what He took away in His power."

In these three miracles (Mt. 8:1-15) we learn that by nature we ourselves are unclean, unworthy, and unserviceable. And concerning Christ, we learn His power, His submission, and His compassion.

Not I but Christ

Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
Mark 8:34

Not I but Christ
I have heard it said, "People should be allowed to be themselves." But I can find no scriptural basis to support this statement, for freedom "to be myself" is to...More
