The evangelist Luke reports that Jesus spent a whole night in...

He (Jesus) went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
Luke 6:12.

The evangelist Luke reports that Jesus spent a whole night in prayer before choosing His twelve apostles. Why do the gospels repeatedly mention that Jesus prayed?

Let us remember how Jesus, the Son of God, humbled Himself, when He became Man. He "made himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men" (Philippians 2:7).

What an inconceivable distance separates eternal God and mankind! Jesus was God and remained God, yet He became a Man and as a Man voluntarily accepted a dependent position.

One reason for Jesus' intensive prayer life is that, as true Man, He submitted fully to the will of God. He never did or said anything that did not correspond to God's mind. He was the first and only person who during His entire life was absolutely obedient willingly and sincerely: "obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross" (Philippians 2:8).

Jesus' prayer life is, moreover, an example for us. As He lived on earth, so should all live. To be able to do so, we need to come to God through conversion and faith. Then we are encouraged to pray regularly in many passages of the Bible (e.g. Luke 22:40; Colossians 4:2; James 5:16).

Prayer preserves and fortifies a believer's relationship to God; it gives us the opportunity to place all our worries and demands into God's good hand; it helps us to make the right decisions, it protects us from temptation; and it makes us useful servants of God in the world.

Today's reading: Exodus 27:9-21 · Luke 11:1-13

FASTING IS NECESSARY

To relate with the Holy Spirit, you must be holy. You must also exercise a living faith, pray and fast. Some people will tell you that because had finished the work of salvation, there is no need to fast. To them, fasting is completely needless and is some form of self-inflicted punishment. But they forget that...More

HOW PROPHETIC ARE YOUR NAMES?

The name you bear is very important because it serves as your identity and your future may be connected to it. The name a person bears is sometimes indicative of the experiences he or she will encounter in life. Take for instance Moses: this name means "drawn out of water"

Bible in one year:
