September 23, 2015 Today's reading: 1 Corinthians 7:20-40 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Matthew 5:14-15 The bushel The Lord Jesus has placed us in this world as His witnesses. As blameless children of God, we are to "shine as lights in the world in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation" ! We should also know very well, in fact, how fatal it is for our inner man, if earthly interests, our employment, wealth and prosperity, fill our hearts. Our light dwindles and is eventually extinguished under the bushel. The necessary leisure is lacking to look after the spiritual wellbeing of the family, let alone to visit and encourage fellow believers. We haven't even time to attend weeknight meetings for prayer and edification or to show loving care for others. (to be concluded next Wednesday) |
