These words were uttered by Abraham...

Between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.
Luke 16:26.

These words were uttered by Abraham, a deceased man of faith, to a wealthy man who had died after leading a comfortable, prosperous, but selfish life apart from God. The Lord Jesus Christ stated this fact. So we do indeed have reliable information about the hereafter.

The entire report in Luke 16 is therefore well worth reading. Please do so, for when someone has died, His eternal fate cannot possibly be changed.

Man’s existence does not end with death despite what many imagine. In today’s verse Jesus Christ, as the Son of God the only attested witness, explains clearly that in the sphere of the dead there are two distinct and strictly separate realms. The great gulf indicates this.

On the one side of this unbridgeable gulf souls find enjoyment and comfort after the suffering experienced in their past life. Countless Christians look forward to a unique future that cannot be described in words.

The other realm is characterised by unceasing torment and pain. The words, “thirst, flame and torment” that the Lord uses in His description signify this horrific state. This sobering account should make everyone think.

Such a fate is irreversible. Therefore everyone must decide now, while God’s call for repentance and conversion still reaches him, where he will eventually land.

Today's reading: Jeremiah 48:26-47 · Romans 13:1-10

While some people have never experienced open doors, others once did, but the doors hitherto opened to them have been shut. In 1 Samuel 16:14, the door which was once opened to Saul was shut. That good door which opened to...More
