What is trustworthy?

Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:1.

What is trustworthy?
We have probably all had frequent trouble with the trustworthiness of statements. We therefore prefer forming our own judgment on visible or tangible facts. Many a person is inclined to exaggerate or show himself in a more favourable light; so it is understandable that we are cautious.

We can judge our opposite number only by appearances. If we want to assess whether his statements are well-meant, sincere and accurate, or unrealistic and intended to deceive, experience can help us. If the person in question has previously proved trustworthy or reliable, I would normally believe him or her.

Whether someone is really fond of me, I cannot see. I must believe it or not. The trust I place in someone may be misdirected or confirmed in due course.

Today's verse from the Bible deals not with the visible, but with the invisible world. Nevertheless it is a matter of a firm conviction.

Think of a lifebelt being thrown out to someone drowning. It is fixed on land or on the lifeboat. If it is grasped, then, and only then, will he feel that he is being pulled to safety. His trust increases and he is not disappointed.

Remember: many facts only become clear when we occupy ourselves with them. If we accept the Word of God, we shall be convinced of its truth.

Today's reading: Jeremiah 51:1-33 · Romans 15:14-22

Adam found an excuse:

Jeremiah 17:9

In a discussion on the above text with some young people, the question was asked: how are we to understand the word "deceitful" here? After some consideration they reached this conclusion: deceitful means that the heart finds an excuse for everything. This seems a very apt...More
