Gathering much needed food

Gideon threshed wheat in the winepress, in order to hide it from the Midianites. And the angel of the LORD appeared to him and said to him, The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valour.
Judges 6:11.12.

Gathering much needed food
In Gideon’s day the Midianites were oppressing the people of Israel. They constantly invaded the land of Canaan and destroyed the harvest. As a result the Israelites suffered more and more.

What did Gideon do in this situation? He planted wheat in spite of the threat from the Midianites. After the harvest he threshed it in a secret place to provide food for him and his family. Because he would not capitulate before the enemy, God recognised his courage: “The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valour.”

This account contains a lesson for our life of faith. The Midianites are an illustration of earthly things that tend to occupy us so much that we do not find the time to give ourselves and our family the necessary nourishment from the Word of God. How easily reading the Bible can be neglected, because this or that has to be done!

We need to be resolute in taking time for personal quiet times and family devotions. As fathers we have a particular responsibility in this matter. Do we read a passage from the Word of God to the children every day? Do we try to explain the text of the Bible to them? New life needs such nourishment, so that it can grow and thrive.

Every believer who refuses to be prevented from gathering spiritual food for his family is a mighty man of valour in God’s sight.

Today's reading: Leviticus 1:1-17 · Psalms 47:1-9

FASTING IS NECESSARY

To relate with the Holy Spirit, you must be holy. You must also exercise a living faith, pray and fast. Some people will tell you that because had finished the work of salvation, there is no need to fast. To them, fasting is completely needless and is some form of self-inflicted punishment. But they forget that...More

ATTENTIVE TO THE MASTER’S INSTRUCTIONS?

It is always good to pay close attention to instructions given by someone you claim to be your guide or guardian. Often, we miss many opportunities, breakthroughs and victories because we fail to see the details of the instructions given to us on a subject. A multinational company once held a promotional exam for...More

Lessons from a broken heart

‘Restore to me the joy of Your salvation.’ Psalm 51:12 NKJV

A broken heart can’t be healed by working sixteen hours a day, sweating it out in a gym, or using mood-altering substances like alcohol and drugs. Those things may bring a temporary fix but don’t bring a lasting cure. After falling...More
