Thoughts on the Gospel of John (113)

He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, let him follow me; and where I am, there my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, him my Father will honour.
John 12:25.26.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (113)
The well-known statement of the Lord's concerning the grain of wheat that falls into the ground and dies, and consequently produces much fruit is a wonderful illustration of the fruit that results from Jesus' resurrection. The principle of giving one's life to save life was realised perfectly in Christ. But it should also be true of His disciples.

How many love life here and now in this world and entertain no thought of God and eternity. Their life will end in death and judgment. But whoever renounces the godless life of this world and entrusts himself to Jesus already receives eternal life with its heavenly glory as a prospect.

Christians serve a Lord who was crucified by the world, but was raised by God and taken up to heaven. So whoever follows Him must be prepared for suffering, shame and contempt in the world. On the other hand he can look forward to eternal glory. Following Jesus Christ also means going where He went after His life here on earth: to the Father.

Whoever is ready and willing to serve Jesus Christ can rejoice that his heavenly Father recognises and honours the fact. This will one day be seen by the world. Compared with that, the highest honours that this world bestows are worthless.

(to be continued next Sunday)

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
