October 29, 2015 Today's reading: Numbers 11:1-15 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. Revelation 3:20 A young lady was sitting opposite me in the underground train. We started talking and exchanged our views on matters of faith. She was born a Muslim; in fact, she did not believe at all. We spoke about what makes people atheists. It can be philosophical speculation or even drastic experiences in one's life. Chiefly it is the problem of our wrongdoing, which cannot be solved by any religion of man's devising. Many people deny the existence of God, because the thought of Him makes them uneasy. The Muslim lady listened to me. She was thoughtful and affected by my remarks. I continued cautiously: "It is foolish to deny God's existence. Nature itself is a witness of the Creator's glory. Before I myself believed in Him, I used to contemplate the starry sky in wonderment." "But God is not only the Creator-God. He is also a Saviour-God. He came down to earth in the Person of Jesus Christ to accomplish the work of redemption of mankind. For 30 years, I have believed in Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for my guilt. The Bible teaches us that no-one can stand before God in His holiness. Nor can anyone redeem himself. We need Christ, the Redeemer. God's grace and love appeared in Him, offering all mankind eternal salvation." When the lady alighted from the train, I called out to encourage her, "Open your heart for the love of God!" With a hearty smile she replied, "I have already done so!" |
