November 1, 2015 Today's reading: Numbers 13:1-25 They were ware of it, and fled unto Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and unto the region that lieth round about: And there they preached the gospel. And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked: The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed, Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked. Acts 14:6-10 Thoughts on the Book of Acts (115) In Iconium, Paul and Barnabas learned that an attempt on their life was being prepared; so they fled to the neighbouring cities and continued their work there. They preached the gospel, the good news of Jesus, the Messiah and the Saviour. Here, too, God confirmed the validity and truth of the word of salvation preached by an amazing miracle. The hopeless state of the lame man who had never been able to walk was known by all. But then the authority and power that Paul possessed as an apostle, and which distinguished him from heathen miracle-workers, became evident (cf. ). He perceived the faith in that man's heart and had the assurance that God wished to heal him. So with divine authority, Paul commanded him to stand up. A miracle of healing in the New Testament is always an illustration of a spiritual truth. Without God, man is powerless and paralysed by sin. He is therefore unable to do good. When he hears God's call to be converted, it depends on whether he is prepared to obey. Only then does he experience how God Himself overcomes the ties and inabilities in his life and gives him the strength to lead his life to God's approval in joy and freedom. Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
