November 11, 2015 Today's reading: Numbers 19 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Titus 2:12-13 Nowhere in the New Testament are believers told to anticipate or prepare for death. It is true that everyone who is secure in Christ can die with the blessed assurance of salvation. However, we should not be looking for death expecting the coming of the Lord Jesus. In scriptural language, "hope" is the expectation of an event that will certainly take place. It excludes any uncertainty; it is based on one of God's promises. Earthly hopes, by contrast, are always uncertain and often end in disappointment. "I will come again," our Lord stated (John 14:3). So the believer's hope is His coming, not death. Among other expressions, it is also called the "blessed hope", because it is an encouraging fact of faith for believers, who may be uncertain as to the fate of those who "have fallen asleep". They should not sorrow like unbelievers who have no hope. "For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who sleep in Jesus. Therefore comfort one another with these words" (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). It is a "blessed hope" because it will bring about a glorious reunion: "The dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them to meet the Lord." Then we shall be together with the Lord Jesus and those who truly love Him in the glory of heaven for eternity. |
