Some people talk about “dear God” and it sounds as if...

God is a just judge.
Psalm 7:11

Some people talk about “dear God” and it sounds as if He is a whimsical, obtuse old man who shouldn’t be taken seriously.

The Bible doesn’t talk like that. It certainly speaks of the “love of God” and that “God is love” (1 John 4:8, 9), and that He paid a high price for this love by sending us His Son Jesus Christ – the dearest thing He had. He wanted us to have access to Him and to be saved, so that we would be with Him forever. Unfortunately, people rejected Jesus Christ and put Him on the cross. They trampled God’s love underfoot instead of thanking Him for it. Has anything changed in this regard in our day?

But God is also a righteous God who cannot tolerate evil. For this reason, He cannot simply overlook the fact that His Son was rejected. Therefore, He will judge this injustice one day as “a just judge”. Jesus Himself once told His listeners, “If you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins”; but He also told them, “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life” (John 8:24; 3:36). Both are true – now as then.

Let me put it in very personal terms: In His love, God has done everything for me by sending His Son to save me. Therefore, I will also have to answer one day for how I relate to Jesus and what He has meant to me. Have I believed in Him so that He has become my Saviour and Lord – or have I rejected Him? My answer will determine where I will spend eternity. Whoever rejects the Saviour will not get past the Judge.

Today’s reading: Isaiah 65:13-25 · Mark 3:20-35
