How wonderfully the glory of the Person of the Lord Jesus is...

They said to him, Who are you? And Jesus said to them, Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning.
John 8:25

How wonderfully the glory of the Person of the Lord Jesus is revealed in this brief answer that He gave the Jews! Who else could have said that all His words agreed perfectly with what He Himself really was? What a discrepancy there is so often between our words and our innermost being!

The Lord Jesus was "from above" (v. 23). He spoke the truth that He had heard from God (v. 40). That sufficed to reveal Him as the One He was: the truth itself. Therefore the Word of God states: "Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ" (John 1:17).

Although the Lord Jesus had the testimony of the truth in Himself as the Son of God, He could appeal to a fourfold witness from other sources. First, there was John the Baptist, who had testified of Him so clearly. Then He quoted the "greater witness" of the works that the Father had given Him and which confirmed His mission from the Father. In addition, the Father Himself had testified of His pleasure in His Son. Finally, there were the scriptures of the Old Testament that bore witness of Him (cf. John 5:32-40). The Lord thus lacked no proof of the truth of His words.

"He whom God has sent speaks the words of God" (John 3:34). Every word that the Lord uttered was perfect, a statement from God. Whenever He spoke, He revealed that "in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily" (Colossians 2:9), and that He was the Word made flesh (cf. John 1:14). How glorious is His holy Person!

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 19:1-11 · Revelation 6:9-17
