When Jesus Christ lived here on earth, the Romans...

He (Pilate) knew that the chief priests had handed him over because of envy.
Mark 15:10

When Jesus Christ lived here on earth, the Romans occupied the land of Israel. The areas that had been conquered were administered by high Roman officials, to whom the soldiers stationed there were subject. Any rebellion by the population was put down immediately with military power.

The Roman governor residing in Jerusalem was Pilate. His task was not easy: the Jews of the time were known for their resistance to the occupation. Now, however, Pilate had a remarkable experience: the Jews turned to him, handing over a man apparently for political reasons. He claimed to be the king of the Jews. Pilate interrogated the prisoner several times. One thing was clear to him: the accused was innocent. His accusers were envious, because he enjoyed the people's favour and their own reputation suffered as a result.

The governor tried to free the prisoner (who was Jesus) by various means. But he met with bitter resistance from the religious leaders in the land. They demanded His death by crucifixion. Again Pilate attempted to avoid this and protested His innocence. They retorted, "If you let this man go, you are not Caesar's friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar" (John 19:12). Pilate did not wish to spoil relations with Caesar; so he decided to yield to their demand and had Jesus crucified.

Jesus allowed it all to happen without resistance or defence. He went to Calvary to be crucified. There He bore the just punishment for the sins of all who believe on Him as their Lord and Saviour.

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 20:1-13 · Revelation 7:1-8
