I was the guide taking a class of schoolchildren round a Bible exhibition. They all listened attentively, and at the end of the tour one boy asked me, "Where did you get all this knowledge about the Bible" and "Do you believe in Jesus?"

How would you have answered these questions in my place?

You might have dealt with the first query like this: "I read the Bible from time to time. I go to a church regularly, where the Bible is explained. I am also interested in ancient manuscripts and archaeological discoveries, because that makes biblical cities, persons and customs become more vivid and meaningful.

And what about the second question: "Do you believe in Jesus?" The answer to this one was for the boy and is for you more important, for knowledge of the Bible alone does not save, but only faith in the Lord Jesus. The Word of God states: "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).

You can read and study the Bible and even lead devotions on the subject. That is good, but insufficient. Without faith in Jesus Christ you will be lost for all your knowledge about the Bible. Your own faith is involved, not that of your parents, your married partner or your parish priest.

This was my answer: "Yes, I do believe in the Lord Jesus. He came to earth for me and died on the cross for my guilt. Now He is my Lord and Saviour."
