Remember!

Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works.
Revelation 2:5

Remember!
The church in Ephesus, to whom these words were addressed, had been characterised by exemplary devotion to and affection for the Lord Jesus in the early days. God was able to entrust them with the most precious truths concerning Christ and His church, as we see in the epistle Paul wrote to them. Have we perhaps experienced such feelings of love and devotion to our Lord, as we followed Him in the early days of our life of faith?

Sadly, that healthy state degenerated, as today's verse makes clear. How are things with us? One thing is certain: such a development is not inevitable. Whoever is not watchful in his life of faith will stumble, even without noticing it, which makes it so tragic. We are not aware when or how we go astray, and it is difficult to admit it. It may not have been a conscious step in the wrong direction. It may have happened through inattention. Therefore the warning to "remember!

It takes some moments of serious contemplation and self-examination to recognise where one has come to and what one has foregone, as we judge our heart and our ways in God's light. But one can consciously and determinedly choose the way of blessing and walk that pathway again in happy fellowship with the Saviour.

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 36:1-10 · Revelation 22:1-7
