Resolution for the Lord

When Asa heard these words and the prophecy of Oded the prophet, he took courage, and removed the abominable idols from all the land of Judah and Benjamin.
2 Chronicles 15: 8.

Resolution for the Lord
Asa was a king of Judah who inquired after God’s will and sought to please the Lord.

In order to strengthen him on this pathway that found God’s approval, He sent a prophet to the king with a message that ended: “But you, be strong and do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded” (v.7). In this way, too, the Lord encourages us to follow Him as His disciples, obeying Him despite the enemy’s resistance and honouring Him by means of a godly life.

When Asa heard the prophet’s words, he took courage and continued on his chosen pathway. His resolution became evident through two of his actions:

“He removed the abominable idols from all the land of Judah and Benjamin”. Spurred on by God’s message, Asa set about conquering idolatry in his land with determination: he removed the strange gods. From this we learn to clear out all that contradicts God’s will in our lives and prevents the Lord Jesus from having the first place in our hearts.
“He restored the altar of the LORD that was before the vestibule of the LORD” (v. 8). Asa wanted the sacrifices to be offered again according to the divine precept. If we live for the Lord and wish to obey the Word of God, then it will also be our desire to follow scriptural instructions regarding the worship and service of God.

Today‘s reading: Deuteronomy 1: 29 – 46 · Matthew 19: 23 – 30
