Jesus, conqueror or loser?

The chief priests mocking said, He saved others; himself he cannot save.

Christ who is the head of all principality and power, having disarmed principalities and powers, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it (i.e. the cross).

Matthew 27: 41.42; Colossians 2: 8.10.15.

Jesus, conqueror or loser?
A well-known journal once published an article with a provocative title: "Jesus, was He a loser?"

At first sight, one might think so: from birth He was rejected by His people. He lived in poverty, suffered, was betrayed and forsaken. Today's first verse above indicates the scorn with which His enemies spoke of Him. Finally, Jesus was crucified and died. The defeat was, however, unreal. During His life Jesus cured the sick; demons fled at His command, the blind received sight and the deaf their hearing. Satan himself was put to flight when he tried to tempt Jesus in the desert.

But it was at the cross that the victory over sin was accomplished: death and all the powers of evil were thoroughly vanquished. That triumph was made evident by the fact that the Lord Jesus did not remain in the tomb: He rose again! After His death countless witnesses saw Jesus alive. Then He ascended to heaven, proving that the work had been accomplished perfectly to the glory of God.

Today we must believe on Him to be united for ever with the Victor. Jesus said, "In the world you will have tribulation; . Soon He will return to reign over the earth and finally destroy all His enemies; and those He has redeemed will reign with Him. Jesus Christ is the Victor for all eternity.

Today‘s reading: Deuteronomy 4: 15 - 28 · Matthew 21: 23 - 32
