Who will explain Holy Scripture for us? Who can...

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.
2 Timothy 3: 16.

Who will explain Holy Scripture for us? Who can tell us how to understand a certain verse of the Bible? God alone can explain His Word!

Perhaps we think it would be better to learn the biblical languages, Hebrew and Greek, and study history or archaeology to understand the historical background better. Learning and studying is useful and helpful, it is, however, not the key for an understanding of Holy Scripture.

So what is necessary? The prime pre-requisite is the possession of new, eternal life. Secondly, we must trust the written Word of God and be dependent on the Holy Spirit. Finally, it is not a question of our own reputation, but of the honour and glory of God. Understanding the Bible is not an intellectual process. Our understanding is the instrument, but not the starting-point. The Holy Spirit works in and through our understanding, so that we comprehend the things of God.

Why are there so many different schools of thought concerning the Word of God? Because we do not all stand in the same relationship or nearness to God. Understanding the Word of God depends rather on how our heart stands with regard to God than on our intellectual capacity. We need to look sincerely to the Lord Jesus for His help.

There is no short cut to understanding the Bible. The Holy Spirit can open the understanding only of those who observe the pre-requisites, so that they “comprehend the scriptures” (Luke 24:45).

Today‘s reading: 1 Samuel 6: 14 – 7: 1 · Ephesians 6: 19 – 24

Let's get back to Mary's song of destiny today. She sang "He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree" (Luke 1:52). Hannah, another woman that found God's
favour put it like this in her own song "The LORD killeth, and maketh alive, he bringeth...More
