Ten days after the ascension of the Lord Jesus the feast of Pentecost was...

When the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 2: 1 – 4.

Ten days after the ascension of the Lord Jesus the feast of Pentecost was celebrated in Jerusalem. In the Old Testament this feast was called the “feast of harvest” or the “feast of weeks”. It was one of the three feasts at which every male Israelite was to visit God’s sanctuary (Exodus 23:16; 34:22.23).

On this day Jesus’ disciples had gathered in Jerusalem “with one accord”. Together they experienced the fulfilment of the promise their Master had given them that the Holy Spirit would come to indwell each one personally as well as in a company (cf. 1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19; 12:13).

During His ministry on earth the Lord Jesus had announced that He would build His church. The time had now arrived through the coming of the Holy Spirit. It was the birth of the Christian church (Matthew 16:18).

God the Holy Spirit came down to earth! This amazing fact was accompanied by visible signs, among which the “divided tongues” indicated that the gospel of the grace of God was to be preached not only to Jews, but to all nations and in every language. And the Holy Spirit overcame the language barrier, enabling the early Christians to speak in other languages than their own mother tongue.

Today‘s reading: 1 Samuel 14: 24 – 35 · Psalms 99: 1 – 9

HOW PERSUADED?

In 2 Timothy 4:10, Demas – a co-labourer with Paul was floored by his love for the world. He became a victim of comfort. Today, many people are also becoming prayerless and shifting their or trust from God to uncertain riches. They are now tending towards the belief that money can fix everything. If you are in...More

A LESSON FROM GOLIATH

At the first sight of David, Goliath despised him. He was amazed that the children of Israel could find no other man to fight him than a young boy. As if that was not enough, Goliath did not see any conventional weapon of war on David. So he asked, “Am I a dog?” The first lesson we have to learn from this story...More
