It is an exceedingly significant fact that every true believer...

Be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.
Ephesians 5: 18.19.

It is an exceedingly significant fact that every true believer possesses the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God was "poured out" on the believers on the day of Pentecost. Since then He has, as a divine Person, indwelt everyone who has found faith. Holy Scripture testifies clearly that this indwelling is something that has taken place once for all time like the new birth. There can be no thought of a repetition.

Some may therefore well ask: "If that is so, why are we, as believers, told to ʼbe filled with the Spirit?ʼ" Let us imagine for one moment a large, beautifully furnished mansion that causes its aristocratic owner much joy, pride and honour. One evening we pass by and notice that all the windows are dark with one exception. Its weak illumination allows us to accept the presence of the owner only with difficulty. On another occasion all the windows are lit up, and festive music can be heard. The host goes from room to room, greeting the guests. He can be found everywhere. He is the same owner, but this time he "fills" the house.

Let us give the Holy Spirit freedom to move by not allowing harmful influences of the world to restrict our spiritual life, but soberly following the teaching of the Word of God in our thinking and acting (cf. ). Then our whole life will radiate the working of the Spirit. Our life will resemble a "feast" for God and have a refreshing effect on our environment.

MEAL OF REMEMBRANCE

The Holy Communion is a very significant meal. Unlike regular meals, it a meal of remembrance. When some people take this meal, they forget to heed the instruction in today's Bible reading where the Lord repeatedly said "this do in remembrance of Me". In other words, the meal reminds us of God's power of...More
