Grace – the gift of God

By grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Ephesians 2: 8.9.

Grace - the gift of God
From this verse so rich in content we shall comment on three expressions: "by grace", "saved", and "through faith".

The first of them, "by grace", shows us that mankind cannot enjoy a living relationship with God through his own efforts. The end of the verse confirms it: on the basis of works no-one can be saved, so that no-one will boast. "By grace" means that being saved from our estrangement from God is a favour. God wishes to bring us into a relationship with Him free of charge. Nowhere does the Bible state that an orderly life gives us the right to enter God's presence.

Being deprived of this vital connection with God, . He is hopelessly lost and needs the Saviour whom God has given us. He sent His Son Jesus Christ to save us from our sins. All who accept this deliverance as God's grace are saved from that moment.

These thoughts could lead us to the widespread but false conclusion that that finally everyone will be saved. The third expression "through faith" contradicts this idea. Only those who accept this offer of grace personally are saved. They thus prove that they submit themselves to God and believe what he says.

Grace is a mine of wealth
Laid open to the poor;
Grace is the sovereign spring of health;
‘Tis life for evermore.

Today‘s reading: 1 Samuel 17: 31 - 40 · Psalms 104: 1 - 12
