Thoughts on the Gospel of John (46)

The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, Come, see a man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ? Then they went out of the city and came to him.
John 4: 28 – 30.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (46)
Jesus’ gracious words opened up the Samaritan woman’s heart. When she finally discovered that He was the Christ, the effect was instantaneous. She left her waterpot there and went into the town.

All that comprised her daily toil and effort, symbolised by the waterpot, she put behind her. She had found what was more important. Even the well with its tradition and her religious forefathers, lost their significance. That Person standing in front of her, who had so impressed her, was incomparably greater than the patriarch Jacob. What a change that brought about in that woman’s life!

“Out of the abundance of his heart his mouth speaks” (Luke 6: 45). This verse was verified in that woman’s life. She invited others to experience the Christ. The Lord had said to her, “Go, call … and come here” (v. 16). This she took to heart and asked the people of the town to come. She wished to lead them to Christ. She had become a missionary.

How many have gone out since then, constantly inviting people to come to Christ. They had all experienced what prompted the Samaritan woman. Their sinful life had been shown up, and after they had confessed their sins and been converted, Jesus’ forgiving grace had covered all.

The woman was not afraid to point out her own sinful past to others. That proved the genuineness of her faith. Her few words reached hearts and had their effect: many came to Jesus. If only this could be repeated over and over again!

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today‘s reading: 1 Samuel 28: 1 – 14 · Colossians 1: 1 – 11

In this uncommon race that we have enlisted in, if you rest prematurely, or take your eyes off the daystar we are following, you will be distracted. Another thing that can divert your attention is opening your mouth prematurely to reveal your secret to ‘sympathetic friends’. Never share a testimony until it is...More

Thanksgiving to God, especially for gifts and blessings received, is required and expected. God abhors ungrateful people. God expects Christians to give thanks in all circumstances they are confronted with. In 1 Thessalonians 5:18, Apostle Paul wrote:
“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of...More
