Since God had the history of Israel recorded in His Word, there...

Jehoash did what was right in the sight of the LORD all the days in which Jehoiada the priest instructed him.
2 Kings 12: 2.

Since God had the history of Israel recorded in His Word, there can be no doubt that we have a lot to learn from it. Here we have God's verdict on the young king Jehoash.

It is both proper and natural that young people's behaviour follows that of their parents and other older persons. God clearly recognises what is good, even if it occurs through the influence of others. It should not be despised, for it is not hypocrisy. Any form of upbringing, however, should lead to the personal responsibility of the young persons concerned. And one day they must give account to God for their actions.

If we read on in the history of Jehoash, it becomes clear that he had not learnt this lesson. He obviously never developed a personal relationship with God. He was merely a "hanger-on" among the believers. And that was to have its consequences. When the leaders of Judah later came to Jehoash, showing signs of respect, he took their advice as usual, although it was opposed to God's will. Jehoash became an idolater! Even worse - he rid himself of Zecharaiah, the priest sent by God to admonish him, by having him murdered.

God sent enemies to punish the king, and Jehoash lost his life: a terrible end for a man who had begun so well. Things may not happen similarly now, but one thing remains: if we do not put things in order with God and live according to His will, nothing can preserve us from coming judgment, no matter how suitably we have lived previously.

Today‘s reading: 2 Samuel 5: 1 - 25 · 1 Samuel 1: 6 - 10

Jesus says to her, Mary. She, turning around, ...

Jesus says to her, Mary. She, turning around, says to Him in Hebrew, Rabboni, which means Teacher. Jesus says to her, Touch Me not, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, I ascend to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.

We have not a high priest not able to sympathize with our infirmities, but tempted in all things in like manner, sin apart.

PROVOKING POSITIVE CHANGE

Change is one event that is constant in life. Change denotes movement from one state to another. There are two categories of change: positive and negative. Due to the fact that change can either be positive or negative, Africans would say: "Change is good for the poor but bad for the rich". Change in life is...More

Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent. For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read...More
