The statement contained in this text must strike every reader as...

I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide my face from shame and spitting.
Isaiah 50: 6.

The statement contained in this text must strike every reader as extraordinary! It can be assumed that none has ever witnessed such cruelty.

It is one of many prophecies by the prophet Isaiah concerning the Messiah, the Redeemer who was yet to come. The gospels report how these ancient prophecies were fulfilled in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (e.g. ).

Let us consider the sufferings themselves. Here is a description of what Jesus Christ, the Son of God endured and how He bore it. He did not defend Himself. He neither moaned nor called for help.

We notice that what happened here was out of the ordinary: neither then nor nowadays is such a thing experienced. We raise our arm in our defence, if we are struck, and turn away if we are reviled, despised or spat upon. Yet here the victim allowed it all to happen without retaliation: even the Roman governor was amazed, and not only he.

Jesus Christ underwent this ill treatment. Should He have resisted that band of murderers? Our Lord chose not to. Why? So that He could accomplish the work of redemption that God had given Him, and wished to reach and win over the hearts of men.

Our text today must make us think. The Saviour endured it all out of love. Then came the crucifixion and His death for the salvation of lost man and the forgiveness of sins. What does this mean to you personally?

Today‘s reading: 2 Samuel 18: 1 - 18 · Titus 1: 10 - 16

What shall the baptized for the dead do if those that are baptized rise not at all? Why also are they baptized for them?
(1 Corinthians 15:29)

Who are "the dead," and who are those "baptized for the dead"? The next verse gives an important hint: "Why do we also endanger ourselves every...More

Be clear minded and self-controlled' 1 Peter 4:7 NIV
Going from childhood to adulthood is a transition that requires a lot of wisdom and love. Your teen will feel and behave child-like sometimes, and adult-like other times. Your job is to realize that whatever their status, they will become a man (woman)...More
