Jesus Christ speaks to people in whatever circumstances of life they...

As he (Jesus) passed by, he saw Levi, the son of Alphæus sitting at the tax office. And he said to him, Follow me.
Mark 2: 14.

Jesus Christ speaks to people in whatever circumstances of life they find themselves and tells them to follow Him. This call was also made to the tax collector Levi. He was to follow Jesus immediately and accompany Him through the land as one of the twelve apostles.

Tax collectors were appointed by the ruling Roman powers. They had obtained their right and authority at a high price and had to hand over the taxes and tolls taken in their area. It also gave them the opportunity to extricate unduly high payments for their own advantage. So the tax collectors in Israel had a bad reputation.

The religious leaders of the people spoke of them as “publicans and sinners”, marking them out as particularly shameful in comparison with other sinners.

Jesus’ calling, however, applies to every class of person: those who have led an honourable life hitherto and such as clearly live in sin and are despised by others. All have the possibility to start a completely new life with Jesus, the Lord.

Levi heard His call, “Follow me!” and didn’t hesitate. He trusted Jesus and took his chance.

Had he considered the matter beforehand? John the Baptist had already called on the people to change their ways, and the despised tax collectors had paid more attention to his message than the self-satisfied Pharisees (cf. Luke 7: 29.30).

Whether Levi longed for another life previously, we do not know. One thing is clear: when Jesus called him, he was ready to leave his old life behind and follow the Lord.

Today‘s reading: 1 Kings 8: 1 – 11 · John 6: 47 – 59

NEGATIVE LIVING

Life comprises of positive and negative elements. As a matter of necessity, it is not good for someone to opt for negative living. The fact that Jesus Christ was destined to die for the sin of the whole world does not exonerate Judas Iscariot from the evil that led him to the idea of betraying the King of Glory....More
