Dr. Friedrich Wilhelm Baedeker (1823 – 1906) was born in Germany, but...

The life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Galatians 2: 20.

Dr. Friedrich Wilhelm Baedeker (1823 – 1906) was born in Germany, but spent a large part of his life in England, where he founded a high school in Weston-super-Mare.

In 1866 He was invited by an army officer to addresses by the well-known evangelist, Lord Radstock. The preaching interested him, and he attended more on the following evenings. But he skilfully evaded any encounter with the preacher.

One evening, however, he did not succeed in avoiding Lord Radstock in time. The latter invited him to come into a neighbouring room for a conversation, which proved to be very heart-searching, for a remarkable change occurred in Dr. Baedecker. His infidel arguments melted away, and he found faith in God. He acknowledged that he was a sinner, confessed his guilt to God and surrendered his life to the Lord Jesus Christ. Joy over his salvation entered his heart. This is how he described these moments: “I went in as a proud unbeliever and came out as a humble believer and disciple of the Lord. God be praised!” Not long after his wife also accepted Christ as her Saviour.

Before his conversion Baedeker had gone on long journeys as far as Australia. In the second half he undertook regular trips to eastern European lands. In Russia he obtained permission to visit penal camps and prisons. He preached the gospel to the inmates and brought them Bibles and material help.

Under normal circumstances, no human being desires to be a nonentity. The various forces in the world however, are responsible for many people spending their entire life amounting to nothing and dwelling in the valley of not-well-to-do persons. The Almighty God Himself in making man did not intend for him to be a...More
