In chapter 3 of the Epistle to the Romans Paul wrote about...

David describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works: blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin.
Romans 4: 6 - 8.

In chapter 3 of the Epistle to the Romans Paul wrote about justification by faith. In chapter 4 he first mentioned Abraham as convincing proof from the Old Testament. Then he quoted King David's words from Psalm 32. David was considered by the Jews to be the greatest of their kings. They also knew that he was a man after God's own heart (cf. .

Whoever confesses his guilt frankly before God finds forgiveness. David calls those who have experienced this "blessed". Their sins are "covered". From Romans 3: 25 we know how our guilt is covered: through the blood of Jesus Christ. When someone turns to God, confessing his guilt, God no longer imputes sin to him. It will never again be laid to his charge.

When Paul quotes David here, he adds the positive side that David did not mention expressly: all who trust in God's grace, admitting their guilt, are pronounced righteous, since He "imputes righteousness apart from works". Everything is based on God's grace, not on man's achievements.

In his life and in the words of the psalm King David is thus a proof of justification by faith, without the works of the law.

Today‘s reading: 1 Kings 15: 9 - 24 · John 10: 31 - 42
