Most of us who are still working or being educated know...

I prayed to the God of heaven, and I said to the king...
Nehemiah 2: 4.5.

Most of us who are still working or being educated know what it is to be under pressure. Appointments have to be kept. Our superiors or teachers determine the course of our life, influencing the way we work. It becomes particularly difficult for us, if we have to represent the interests of our firm or institution or fulfil the demands of others, when these are in conflict with our own conscience.

In such situations the children of God can always pray. Maybe there is only time for a brief prayer; it is nevertheless a prayer to God. And He comes to our aid, opening up a way out of our predicament. What we often need is, in fact, only His peace at the time.

Nehemiah was an important official at the court of the king of Persia. But the plight of Jerusalem and the Jews who had returned there affected him, and he sensed his responsibility toward them. For four months he prayed silently for them (ch. 1: 1 – 2: 1). Then the king noticed his cupbearer’s sadness, which was out of place, and inquired after the reason for it. Nehemiah was shocked at the mighty monarch’s reproach, but humbly informed him.

The king then asked Nehemiah what he would request, and Nehemiah reacted correctly: he had prayed for the opportunity to tell the king his concern. Now it had come; so he quickly prayed to God. That gave him the peace to reply. And his request was granted.

Nehemiah declared that the king granted it “according to the good hand of my God upon me” (v. 8). Praying unceasingly, then a brief prayer moved God’s “good hand” to affect the heart of the world’s most powerful ruler.

Today‘s reading: 1 Kings 20: 31 – 43 · John 13: 31 – 38

It may be that Jehovah will look on mine affliction, and that Jehovah will requite me good for my being cursed this day. And David and his men went by the way; and Shimei went along on the hill’s side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast dust.

ARE YOU FRUITFUL?

The words “Be fruitful,” appear in the Bible for the first time in Genesis 1:28. Although it came as a commandment, it can also be taken as a blessing. Because it is a commandment, God expects all His creation to comply with it by bearing fruit and multiplying through self-reproduction. On the other hand, if...More
