The circumstances of our life, e.g. at school or work, or...

A certain man of Bethlehem, Judah, went to dwell in the country of Moab.
Ruth 1: 1.

The circumstances of our life, e.g. at school or work, or in our family, can have a strong influence on our mental condition. In unfavourable cases they can lead to discouragement and exhaustion. This happens especially when one sees no end to the trouble. The verse in proves the truth of this: "Hope deferred makes the heart sick."

We do not know how long Elimelech and his wife Naomi had sought a way out of their trouble. Did they wonder why God allowed that famine to affect His people? How long did they deliberate whether to move to Moab or not?

Elimelech made his decision, and a wrong one at that! They wanted to stay on the fruitful plateau of Moab for a time, but not permanently in that land opposed to God. But there was no relief for the famine; so they stayed on year by year. After settling there, their troubles began: first Elimelech died, then his sons married Moabite wives. Ten years passed, then Naomi's two sons also died.

God graciously led Naomi and her daughter-in-law Ruth back to Bethlehem-Judah, where they became a memorial to God's grace. But do not forget that Elimelch failed to fulfil his responsibility as a father and brought much suffering upon his family, although from a human point of view he had only sought their good. In Moab they made connections with the world.

And Elimelech and his sons died in a land far away from the one God had given His people, where He was worshipped. His tragic history is thus a serious warning for us. We must recognise and accept God's ways with us and take care not to go our own ways.

GOD PROMOTES

When God set out to deliver the children of Israel from Egypt, it was to take them out of captivity and bondage and to lift them up. God has come to take you out of your current location in the miry clay to your promised land - a land flowing with milk and honey. This simply tells us that the God of Abraham, Isaac...More

TRAIN UP YOUR CHILD 1

One major undoing of modern civilized society is an abounding generation of untrained children. This trend did not just start, but has been on for some time now. The result is that many untrained children of few years back have become parents themselves. It is the multiplier effect of their lack of proper home...More

A LIBERAL HEART?

Read:
, God asked the widow to feed the prophet before taking care of herself. At the end of the day, what was not enough became more than enough. To what extent do you practice giving as an individual, family, church or nation?

Those who never give will continue to beg, if you desire to...More

Hebrews 11:24-28

Author Zora Neale Hurston wrote a book titled Moses, Man of the Mountain. Published in 1939, it retells the story of Moses and the Exodus. Hurston altered details of the story for her own purposes, weaving in allusions to African American history, folklore, and song. She reflected...More
