Thoughts on the Gospel of John (65)

How can you believe, who receive honour from one another, and do not seek the honour that comes from the only God? Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you - Moses, in whom you trust. For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?
John 5: 44 - 47.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (65)
Striving for honour, making a name for oneself, praising one another - these things are in stark contrast to biblical faith. A feature of faith is that one forgets oneself to surrender to God. Whoever vaunts his ego is not in a position to do so. Seeking honour and recognition from God involves humbling ourselves before God and acknowledging that we are sinners. Who is prepared to do so? We would rather display our achievements before God and expect His recognition. Whoever fails to heed God's will, which is that all should honour the Son, cannot expect honour from Him.

The Lord ended this discourse by emphasising how important and valuable the writings of Moses are. Although no-one has ever kept the Father's sayings in his heart and lived accordingly like Jesus, or made them known unaltered at every opportunity, as He did, yet He placed Scripture as a testimony on a higher rank than His own sayings. Was Moses then greater than Jesus? By no means! Moses was the law-giver, a servant. Christ, by contrast, is the Son and Lord of all. Because the written Word of God has the permanent character of testimony and is acknowledged as God's Word by the Jews, the Lord places it over His own word. Finally, Scripture has such a high value, because it speaks of Christ Himself .

GOD PROMOTES

When God set out to deliver the children of Israel from Egypt, it was to take them out of captivity and bondage and to lift them up. God has come to take you out of your current location in the miry clay to your promised land - a land flowing with milk and honey. This simply tells us that the God of Abraham, Isaac...More

TRAIN UP YOUR CHILD 1

One major undoing of modern civilized society is an abounding generation of untrained children. This trend did not just start, but has been on for some time now. The result is that many untrained children of few years back have become parents themselves. It is the multiplier effect of their lack of proper home...More

A LIBERAL HEART?

, God asked the widow to feed the prophet before taking care of herself. At the end of the day, what was not enough became more than enough. To what extent do you practice giving as an individual, family, church or nation?

Those who never give will continue to beg, if you desire to...More

Hebrews 11:24-28

Author Zora Neale Hurston wrote a book titled Moses, Man of the Mountain. Published in 1939, it retells the story of Moses and the Exodus. Hurston altered details of the story for her own purposes, weaving in allusions to African American history, folklore, and song. She reflected...More
