How shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? … So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Romans 10: 14.17.

A man of 90 years of age used to live in my village. He was the walking history book of the district. In his younger years he had had various jobs that no longer exist. He took part in celebrations in places that are now merely a heap of stones. With his leaving certificate from school he became the mayor’s secretary and was responsible for social measures that are still valid in the community. He was, moreover, the best hunter in the district with his excellent knowledge of the region and the habits of the animals.

I naturally enjoyed visiting him; it was never boring. It was a joy to ask him questions and listen to his tales.

One day my conscience was pricked. I told myself, “You have the benefit of that old man’s experience, but what you know about the treasure that you possess you have never told him.

So I gave him a New Testament that he positively devoured. For all that he had achieved in his life, he was not too proud to examine himself in God’s light and recognise that he was a sinner. He accepted the Lord Jesus as his Saviour and became very happy through believing in Him.

Ninety years had passed before the love of God penetrated his heart. He was one who was saved at the last moment, for soon afterwards he was called to eternity to be with Christ, His Saviour.

Today‘s reading: 2 Kings 23: 1 – 11 · Psalms 108: 1 – 14

Protect The ‘New Shoots’

‘There is hope for a tree: if it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not fail.’ Job 14:7 NIV

It takes God’s wisdom to find a mate who can fit where you are and go where you’re going. If you choose using only your own wisdom, you might not make the best choice. And when...More
