God demands of people who have fallen into sin that they should repent. They...

Jonah began to enter the city on the first day’s walk. Then he cried out and said, Yet forty days, and Niniveh shall be overthrown. So the people of Nineveh believed God.
Jonah 3: 4.5.

God demands of people who have fallen into sin that they should repent. They must change their inner attitude and the way they lead their lives and turn to God.

History has recorded that there have been extraordinary days of repentance, e.g. in Europe on the occasion of the Turkish war in 1664, or during the years of great inflation from 1770 to 1772. Then people understood that God was speaking to them through deprivation or war.

The inhabitants of the ancient metropolis of Niniveh heard Jonah, the preacher of repentance, and regretted their sins. There were more than enough reasons for turning from them, as the people knew. But what is more significant: they didn’t suppress any thought of God or his warning. They had understood the prophet’s preaching, by which he announced God’s judgment on the sinful city. They took the admonition seriously. It was a unique day of repentance involving even the king, as the Bible reports (v. 6).

Is the measure of guilt and moral corruption in the general manner of life today any less than in the Niniveh of that time? Does our society need less repentance? A change of attitude, which is what repentance involves, begins with each one personally. God, the Judge of all the world, notices it and will forgive. Repentance hurts, however. Having to admit and confess that our way of life has been wrong and must arouse God’s wrath is painful. Yet it is the only way to put things in order with God.

Today‘s reading: Ezekiel 14: 1 – 11 · Psalms 119: 65 – 80

LIFE IN ABUNDANCE 1

Under normal circumstances, no human being desires to be a nonentity. The various forces in the world however, are responsible for many people spending their entire life amounting to nothing and dwelling in the valley of not-well-to-do persons. The Almighty God Himself in making man did not intend for him to be a...More
