The remarkable story of Achsah and Othniel is reported twice in...

Now it was so, when she (Achsah) came to him (Othniel, her husband), that she persuaded him to ask her father for a field. So she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, What do you wish? She answered, Give me a blessing; since you have given me land in the south, give me also springs of water.
Joshua 15: 18.19.

The remarkable story of Achsah and Othniel is reported twice in Holy Scripture (see also Judges ch. 1) and that not without good reason.

What is so special about this woman Achsah? It is her love of the land that God had given to His earthly people after their years of wandering through the desert. From her words and action we see her fervent wish to actually take possession of the land and profit by it. What caused Achsah to love it so much? Her father Caleb, who had seen the land in all its beauty and richness years previously, must have told her repeatedly of that wonderful land, in which excellent fruit grew, and which was so fertile and blessed. It was, above all, the land that God Himself had promised to His people. Her father’s appreciation of that land found its echo in young Achsah’s heart.

What a spur that is for fathers and mothers today to present a picture of God’s promises and blessings vividly before the eyes of their children from an early age! It will encourage them also to seek God’s blessing resolutely in their later life. Today, when they are even smaller and younger, we have the opportunity to sow the seeds of longing for it in their tender hearts.

Today‘s reading: Ezekiel 17: 1 – 24 · Psalms 119: 129 – 144

BE STRONG

You don’t charge someone to be strong if there is no task to be performed or if pressure is not required, either for motion or putting up resistance against an opposing force. In the physical realm, mere movement requires strength. This explains why a sick person or a person just recovering from an ailment finds...More
