The angel Gabriel had brought the news to Mary that she...

Mary said, My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour, for he has regarded the lowly state of his maidservant; for behold, henceforth all generations will called me blessed, for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation.
Luke 1: 46 – 50.

The angel Gabriel had brought the news to Mary that she should become the mother of the Redeemer. To Mary’s question He explained that the Holy Spirit would perform this miracle without the intervention of any man. Mary then replied simply and devotedly, “Let it be to me according to your word” (v.38). There was no discussion or questioning in unbelief. She believed God and put herself at His disposal.

Afterwards Mary withdrew to “the hill country” (v. 39), to her cousin Elizabeth. Here she could peacefully consider the angel’s announcement and God’s incomprehensible plans. Her behaviour and the praise expressed towards God in the words above set us an excellent example.

We should not, however, overrate the status of this faithful woman. We must not ascribe sinlessness to her. Jesus Christ was pure and holy in essence; His mother was not. Nor did she claim to be so. In her words of praise she aligns herself with those of her nation who all needed the Saviour and redemption.

Instead of paying attention to Mary, let us look to God, as she did. Let us praise God for sending His Son to earth in His mercy to be our Redeemer.

Challenges for the Church of Today

‘God’s purpose in all this was to use the church to display His wisdom in its rich variety.’ Ephesians 3:10 NLT

Here are three of the challenges the church faces today:

(1) We can’t experience a new move of God if we insist on clinging to an old one. ‘God’s purpose in all this...More
