Standing in the limelight

Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern for all who are going to believe on him for everlasting life.
1 Timothy 1:15.16.

Standing in the limelight
How we love prominence! It is part of man's nature to want to take the prime place. But here it is not a question of being the footballer of the year, the number one in the tennis rankings, or the world's best skier, not even of being the world's richest inhabitant.

Today's text is about being the number one sinner, the guiltiest person who has ever lived - hardly something to be proud of! Saul of Tarsus is the person in question. He had been persecuting Christians to the point of death. He had compelled them to blaspheme the Saviour Jesus Christ. He didn't restrict his activity to Jerusalem and the land of Israel: He hunted the Christians down in foreign cities, too.

Saul didn't cease pursuing his aim until Jesus Christ called from heaven: "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?" (Acts 9:4). This authoritative word cast him down to the ground. For days afterwards his conscience was troubled for blaspheming and persecuting none other than the Son of God Himself. This ambitious man, who had such a load of guilt, was converted there and then. He, the chief of sinners, accepted Christ as his personal Saviour.

If he could be forgiven and saved through God's abundant grace, then you can, too. Everyone has the same chance, provided he acknowledges his guilt, surrenders before Jesus Christ and turns to Him for salvation.

Today's reading: Hosea 4:1-19 · James 2:1-13

A divine midwife must be in control of his or her choices and ensure that they are God-centred and not self-centred. They must be ready to take decisions even when it hurts them. They must also be prepared to respond to Satans...More

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; ...More

Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
(2 Peter 3:18)

God in His grace has centered every blessing for us in Christ. Without Christ, we have nothing, nothing but our sins; with Christ we have all things, and therefore want nothing in addition to Christ. As...More

SPIRITUAL WARFARE I

When we are told to put on the whole armour of God, one thing becomes clear instantly. This is the fact that there is a God. We cannot be talking of the armour of God if there is no God. Anyone who thinks that there is no God is a fool (Psalm 14:1). You have to pray that God would reveal Himself to you. The...More
