The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Psalm 23:1-3.

Pyrrhus lived from 319 to 272 B.C. He was the king of the realm of Epirus in the north-west of Greece and was one of the leading warlords in the era following Alexander the Great. He achieved fame through conquering the Romans. In one of these victorious battles, however, he lost so many of his own soldiers that he exclaimed: "Another such victory and we are lost!" Even today a victory gained at a great cost is called a Pyrrhic victory.

The king frequently discussed things with his court diplomat Cineas, who once asked the monarch what he hoped to gain from battles against the Romans. Pyrrhus replied that he could then conquer all Italy. "And then?" - "Then I'll take Sicily, Libya and Carthage." Cineas did not let up: "And when you have defeated these lands?" - "Then we'll stay at home and live in peace!" Cineas then exclaimed; "O king! Why not start with this peace?"

Everyone longs for peace and rest: in the world, in his own country, at work, in his own four walls and in his heart. But the world constantly gets more hectic and troubled.

In the well known words from Psalm 23 we find an illustration of rest, peace and satisfaction. Doesn't that encourage us to seek rest, contentment and happiness with the Good Shepherd, who said: "Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28).

Today's reading: Hosea 11:1-12 · James 5:7-12

Another thing that can divert your attention is opening your mouth prematurely to reveal your secret to sympathetic friends'. Never share a testimony until it is...More
