The decision that the leaders of the Jews had to make...

The governor answered and said to them, Which of the two do you want me to release to you? They said, Barabbas.
Matthew 27:21.

The decision that the leaders of the Jews had to make would have great consequences: Jesus or Barabbas? Barabbas was a terrorist, a robber who had participated in a revolt and committed murder in it, too. The Romans made short work of robbers and rebels: it meant death by crucifixion. So Barabbas would land in prison and face execution.

Jesus Christ had been condemned to death by the highest court of the Jews for calling Himself the Son of God. Wasn't He the Son of God? Hadn't His many miracles proved it? That could not be denied; jealousy was actually the reason why he had been delivered to Pilate, the Roman governor, for the sentence and its execution.

But it was the governor's custom to release one prisoner at the feast of the Passover. The people could decide - for Christ, the Son of God, or for Barabbas, the murderer. Pilate repeatedly testified that he found no guilt in Jesus and offered to release Him. But the multitude had already made its decision: "Crucify him; crucify him! Not this man, but Barabbas!" (John 18:40; 19:6) And their shouting increased. Finally, Pilate fulfilled their demand.

Whom would people today have chosen? The murderer, Barabbas, and wickedness with rebellion against God. Such a decision means eternal condemnation far from God.

Eternal life, on the other hand, is for whoever decides for Jesus Christ. He said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). Christ suffered on the cross for sinners; He bore the punishment of the sins of all who believe in Him.

Today's reading: Amos 9:1-15 · Proverbs 25:11-18

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; ...More

Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
(2 Peter 3:18)

God in His grace has centered every blessing for us in Christ. Without Christ, we have nothing, nothing but our sins; with Christ we have all things, and therefore want nothing in addition to Christ. As...More

SPIRITUAL WARFARE I

When we are told to put on the whole armour of God, one thing becomes clear instantly. This is the fact that there is a God. We cannot be talking of the armour of God if there is no God. Anyone who thinks that there is no God is a fool (Psalm 14:1). You have to pray that God would reveal Himself to you. The...More
