Why believe the Bible? (1)

I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.

From childhood you have known the holy scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 1:5; 3:15.

Why believe the Bible? (1)
Some of our readers may wonder why so many Christians believe the Bible absolutely. Other religions and philosophies of life also have ancient traditions. There are various answers to this question.

Some Christians have had a similar experience to Timothy. They have grown up at home with Holy Scripture. They recognised from the life of their parents and grandparents that their faith was genuine and discovered that believing the Bible gave them true happiness and helped them to overcome difficult circumstances in their life.

Others were introduced to the Bible through the credible testimony of friends or colleagues. Yet the moment came for all when they were no longer content with the testimony of others, but needed assurance for themselves on questions regarding the Bible, Jesus and their relationship to Him.

They had a similar experience to the people of Sychar, who first believed a remarkable report from a woman who had met Jesus, then came to know Him themselves and said. “We believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.

VICTORY OVER ENEMIES II

Paul in Philippians 3:10 prayed earnestly:
“That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;”
One wonders what prompted the apostle to pray this type of prayer! It may be, as we shall shortly see, that he...More

The cliché “a God of love” who shows leniency...

Our God is a consuming fire.
Hebrews 12:29

The cliché “a God of love” who shows leniency regarding the shortcomings of so-called “good people” (if they indeed exist) is commonly used. In an absolute sense, however, it is incorrect.

It is true that God has revealed Himself as...More
