During the reign of terror of the Red Khmer in Cambodia Song had to flee to Thailand to escape genocide. Of the twenty-five companions on the dangerous road to exile only seven reached their destination after surviving the most difficult conditions. All the others died or were killed on the journey.

Song then spent four years in a refugee camp in Thailand. There he came in touch with the gospel through missionaries. During the early months he determinedly rejected all that concerned Christian faith. He was given a Bible, but he used the leaves for cigarettes.

Some months later he was given another Bible. this time he started to read it, page by page, and God spoke to his conscience. The power of the Word of God overcame his strong resistance. Song recognised himself as a sinner who needed the salvation and forgiveness that God offered in Jesus Christ. And he received Christ into his life as his Saviour and Lord.

When God first appealed to his heart and conscience, Song would not listen. But when he heard God's call for the second time, he no longer hardened his heart, but responded. Why was that so important? Because repeated rejection of the gospel hardens the heart all the more, until it becomes insensitive to God's call. That explains the appeal to all who hear God's voice to respond "today".
