An angel announced the name that the Son of God should...

You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.
Matthew 1:21.

An angel announced the name that the Son of God should bear on earth long before His birth: Jesus. The name itself reveals God's wondrous plan, for Jesus means: the Lord is salvation." That was precisely the point of His coming into the world. So God became Man in the Person of Jesus. He wished to "save his people from their sins".

In the first place Christ came to His earthly people Israel, who had strayed far from God. Did they even know that they were His people, the people of the living God? By no means were they living in the great blessing that He had promised them, if they served Him. They were sinners like all others and needed salvation from their sins more than anything else.

But the sole fact that the Son of God became Man and lived on earth was not sufficient. He had to lay down His life at the cross of Calvary as "a ransom for many" (Mark 10:45) and suffer God's punishment for sin. So His incarnation cannot be separated from His sufferings and His atoning death.

It had been appointed in God's plan of salvation that only in the Person and redeeming work of Jesus could people be offered the remission of sins. So shortly after the ascension of Christ Peter preached that the name of Jesus is the only name that God has given "by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). And the moment will come when at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow and "that every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord" (cf. Philippians 2:10).

Today's reading: Genesis 13:5-18 · 2 Peter 2:1-8

Today God is calling you (3)

I have prayed for you, that your faith will not fail.' Luke 22:32 NASB

God wants you to do His will, but you'll never reach the place of spiritual maturity in which you're free of Satan. You can overcome him, but you can't eliminate him. Look at Peter. He had only one gear: overdrive. He was always...More
