Two centurions in the gospels (1)

The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.

By grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.

Matthew 8:8; Ephesians 2:8.

Two centurions in the gospels (1)
One would hardly expect to find two captains of the Roman legion in the gospels. Being used to commanding, they were not gentle, and their role in the occupational army didn't seem suitable to turn them to Jesus, that Jew despised even by His compatriots.

The first of them was the one in Capernaum (Matthew 8:5-13). He was very attached to one of his servants, who was ill and about to die. He had heard of Jesus, to whom they brought all who were sick and whom He cured (Matthew 4:24). But he considered himself neither worthy enough for Jesus to enter his house nor even to speak a word to Him. His humble demand revealed faith in Jesus' love and power. And he experienced that the Lord answered his prayer immidiately.

The step that man took is an example for everyone who wishes to approach God. First, we must be aware that we deserve nothing. No-one has the right to take advantage of Him. All our righteousnesses are as filthy rags in God's sight (cf. Isaiah 64:6). At the same time we can trust Him; He has the desire to heal as well as the power to do so. He expects us to appeal to Him; as did the leper who came to Him, saying, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean". Immediately his leprosy was cleansed (Matthew 8:2.3).

(to be concluded tomorrow)

Today's reading: Genesis 28:1-22 · Psalms 14:1-7
