I am (4)

I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.
John 10:9.

I am (4)
We all know what a useful function doors have. We could not do without them; every day we use them to gain access to buildings, rooms and cupboards, or to secure our private domain against undesirable visitors. How good it is that the Lord Jesus regarded Himself as an ever open door when He uttered the words of the verse above. Everyone may enter to be saved and thus come into the security enjoyed by the entire flock of the Good Shepherd, for He Himself tends and guards it. If we enjoy salvation on the ground of the shed blood of Jesus Christ, no intruder will ever succeed in removing us from His flock. Our faith underlines this assurance of salvation.

The Good Shepherd not only cares for the eternal security of His sheep, but is concerned to provide them with the right nourishment. That is why we have this double illustration of the door: the sheep enter to enjoy the satisfaction and fellowship of His presence with the flock, but in addition they can be led out to good pastureland. As God's children in need of spiritual food, we have to go the same way, i.e. out through the door. The practical application of this scripture means that we commend ourselves to the Lord before opening His Word, so that true growth in the inner man may result.

Let us not forget that Holy Scripture also tells us of a closed door, before which five foolish virgins stood clamouring for admission. In spite of their pleading, it was refused them. So enter while the door is still open!

(to be continued next Monday)

Today's reading: Genesis 30:25-43 · Psalms 17:8-15
