Ten days after the ascension of the Lord Jesus the feast of Pentecost, the...

When the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing, mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 2:1-4.

Ten days after the ascension of the Lord Jesus the feast of Pentecost, the Jewish harvest festival, was celebrated in Jerusalem. It was one of the three great feasts, at which every male Israelite had to appear "before God" (Exodus 23:14-17). On this day the disciples of Jesus experienced the fulfilment of the Lord's promise: the Holy Spirit came upon them to dwell in them for ever, both in each one individually and in them as a fellowship.

When Jesus was still with His disciples, He had announced that He would build His church. The moment had now come, when the Holy Spirit came. It was the birth of the church, the assembly of God (Matthew 16:18; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19; 12:13).

God the Holy Spirit came to earth. This tremendous fact was accompanied by external signs:

The divided tongues signified that the gospel of the grace of God should be preached to all peoples and in all languages. And the Holy Spirit enabled the first Christians to speak in other existing languages that they had not learned.

With the exodus of the people of Israel from Egypt the age of the law had begun. God had brought about mighty signs and wonders to mark this dispensation. In the same way God now confirmed through signs and wonders the apostles' preaching in Christianity, the dispensation of grace.

Today's reading: Genesis 40:1-23 · Psalms 25:1-11

FALSE PROPHETS AND THEIR PROPHECIES-THE FALSE PROPHET

And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the...More

EVERYONE NEEDS A MIRACLE

Some years ago, I was invited to be the guest speaker at a garden party in an exclusive, highbrow residential area. Because I arrived at the venue quite early, I was made to sit for a while in the house of my host. The house was an exquisite parade of wealth and splendour. I had never seen such brazen display of...More

PRAY UNTIL SOMETHING HAPPENS

Read:
that when he cried to the Lord, the Lord healed him. This is another testimony of someone who believed in the God that answers prayers. May prayer for someone using this devotional is that as you cry unto God today, He will answer you as He answered Hannah, Jabez and Elijah in Jesus'...More

The bankruptcy that saves

None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him - for the redemption of their souls is costly, and it shall cease for ever.

You were not redeemed with silver or gold from your aimless conduct but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and...More
